JFSC and Sagesse are co-hosting “REAL Talk: Understanding and Responding to Domestic Violence in Dementia Care”, a free virtual workshop with registered social worker Samantha Norberg and REAL Talk program coordinator Carolyn Mitchell, on Wednesday May 25th, 10:00 –11:30am. To register click here, contact samanthan@jfsc.org or call 403-692-6392.

This seminar explores the complex relationship between dementia and domestic violence and will help family caregivers and their support networks learn to recognize domestic violence and utilize intervention strategies in the context of both dementia care and domestic violence.

Two in five Albertans will be caregivers at some point in their lives. Our population is aging, there is an increasing incidence of dementia, and a larger number of family members are now caring for their loved ones in their homes. One third of family caregivers for persons living with dementia experience physical, verbal or psychological violence perpetrated by the person they are caring for.

JFSC’s Caregiver Support Program provides free social work services to carers of seniors with chronic illness and/or (dis)ability, including age-related concerns. Caregivers can access individual counselling, group sessions, education, and access to resources in the areas of aging and memory, dementia (such as Alzheimer’s Disease), chronic illness, coping and self-care strategies, grief and loss, and resiliency.

Sagesse provides prevention, intervention, and collective impact programming to tackle all the systemic and societal causes that lead to domestic abuse.

For more information contact Samantha at samanthan@jfsc.org or call 403-692-6392. For more information about Sagesse’s programs and services go to www.sagesse.org.
