JFSC Board of Directors is recruiting

JFSC is seeking experienced and values-driven business leaders to join our Board of Directors. We are particularly interested in individuals with expertise in finance, community engagement, and corporate responsibility who are passionate about strengthening communities and creating lasting social impact.

At JFSC, we are dedicated to enriching lives and strengthening communities by providing essential social services to individuals and families across all life spans. Grounded in the values of compassion, social justice, and repairing the world, JFSC has built a 65-year legacy of service in Calgary as a non-denominational, accredited social service agency.

Today, JFSC is a dynamic and growing organization with:

  • 130 employees and 131 volunteers
  • An annual operating budget of $7 million
  • Approximately 2,300 clients served annually

THE ROLE: BOARD OF DIRECTORS

As a volunteer Board Director, you will play a critical role in providing strategic governance, oversight, and stewardship to ensure JFSC’s continued sustainability, relevance, and impact. We have roles open for both Governance and Finance Committee.

GOVERNANCE COMMITTEE RESPONSIBILITIES

Governance Committee members help ensure the Board operates with clarity, accountability, and effectiveness, while continuously strengthening governance practices.

Key contributions include board recruitment, succession planning, director orientation and ongoing development, governance policy and best practice oversight, board evaluation and performance improvement.

FINANCE COMMITTEE RESPONSIBILITIES

Finance Committee members provide oversight and strategic guidance to ensure JFSC’s long-term financial sustainability and accountability. CPA, CFA required

Key contributions include financial oversight and reporting, financial policy and strategic planning, audit and risk management, strengthening financial governance practices.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

We are seeking individuals who bring a strong combination of strategic thinking, governance experience, and commitment to community impact.

CORE COMPETENCIES

Strategic & Business Insight

  • Experience contributing to strategic planning or transformation

Leadership & Governance

  • Experience working with or reporting to a Board

Financial Literacy

  • Ability to read and interpret financial statements and understand key financial drivers and risks

Community Commitment

  • Passion for community well-being and social impact and the ability to enhance JFSC’s reputation and partnerships

Communication & Collaboration

  • Contributes thoughtfully to board discussions through diverse perspectives and inclusive decision-making

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

We are particularly interested in candidates who bring 15 years or more professional experience in:

  • Executive leadership insight, including mentoring and supporting senior leaders
  • Futures thinking in the ability to navigate uncertainty and long-term trends
  • Systems thinking in understanding complex social issues and interconnected systems
  • Professional experience in finance, accounting, investment for Finance Committee candidates

COMMITMENT & TERM

Time Commitment: 40 - 50 hours annually

Meetings:

  • 9 Board meetings per year
  • 9 Committee meetings annually
  • Annual strategic planning session

Term: 2 years (renewable)

Compensation: Volunteer position
